Canada Moves West and The American Revolution Review

Hello parents and Humanities 9 students.  In class today we finished our last class of Social Studies review.  We discussed the big ideas associated with settlers moving west in North America, the fur trade and the events of the American Revolution.  I encourage students to continue to study and add to their review packages that were handed out last week.  Tomorrow we will review how to write a paragraph and an essay.  We will also start reviewing our literary terms for short stories and poetry.

Humanities 9 Review Week

I apologize for not keeping up to date on the classroom blog.  We have been very busy reviewing and preparing for the final exam on Friday June 22.

Last Monday and Tuesday (June 11-12)- we finished up our Children's book's- Children books were due on Friday June 15- please hand it in if you have not done so yet.

Wednesday (June 13)- chapter 1 and geography review

Thursday (June 14)- Chapter 2 English revolution review- review work time

Friday (June 15)- Chapter 3 French Revolution and First Nations Review

In class today we reviewed Chapter 5 Industrial Revolution and Chapter 8 Arrival to Canada.

Please continue to study your notes and your literary terms.  Tomorrow we will finish our social studies review with Chapter 9 (Canada Moves West) and Chapter 10 (American Revolution)

Children's Book Work Day

Hello parents and Humanities 9 students.  In class today we continued to work towards finishing our children's book.  There are some really good looking books coming together.  Students will be given 2 more work periods to finish their books.  Good luck and make sure to have your book completed for hand in on Friday June 15.

Please study for your chapter 10 American Revolution Quiz that will take place tomorrow.  The questions will be generated from the textbook and the notes that we took in class.

Loyalists and The War of 1812

Today's Humanities 9 class was shortened due to our tutorial day.  I was disappointed to not see any students from Humanities 9 during the tutorial time.  Some students would have benefited from attending today's tutorial.

2.) The results of the American Revolution
3.) The War of 1812 and the results of the war
4.) Mapping the War of 1812 and British North America

Work Day

Today's class was devoted to working on our Children's book.  Students will be given two more work blocks and than we will start our year review.  Children's books will be due on Friday June 15.

Final Exam will take place on Friday June 22.  If you are not going to be at school that day you must make arrangements with me to write your test at any earlier date.  If you do not write the test you will receive a 0 and lose 10% of your final grade.  We will start review next week please start preparing.

Today in Humanities 9 today we discussed the causes of the American Revolution.  These were the following topics discussed:
1.) Causes of the American Revolution- taxation (stamp act, tea act), Royal Proclamation, Quebec Act
2.) Discussed who the Loyalists were
3.) Unfortunately our American Revolution movie did not work so we continued to work on our Children's books.

Children's Book

Today in Humanities 9 we started a new Language Arts project.  The students will be creating a children's book on any Social Studies 9 topic that we have covered this year.  We will be working on this project for the next 4 weeks.  Students are required to get a small scrapbook from Walmart to help them organize their story.

In class we covered the following topics:
Planning for the story
1. Analyzing children's book activity
2. Storyboarding- planning out our stories

Tomorrow we will continue comparing and contrasting the HBC and NWC.

3.) Discussed the importance of auidence and style(Formal vs Informal)
4.) Discussed how to develop a thesis statement- remember the formula topic + opinion = Thesis Statement

Over the last couple of classes we have been preparing for our Industrial Revolution unit test. This is was we covered over the past 3 classes;

-quiz your buddy- read the last pages about society during the I.R. and each student had to come up with 5 quiz questions which they used to quiz another person in the room about the reading.

-watched a video on child labour during the Industrial Revolution

Friday

During the week we discussed a number of contributing factors related to the Industrial Revolution.

Yesterday was dicussed the economic factors behind the Industrial Revolution such as:
1.)Free Market
2.)Laissez-faire
3.)Capatilism
4.)Socialism
5.)Globalization

We also reviewed our previous lesson on transportation and resources.

On Thursday we discussed the changes in transportation and how that affected the movement of goods and resources during the Industrial Revolution. Some of the topics discussed in class were:
1.) Steam engine trains, machines,steam boats
2.) Resources that fueled the Industrial Revolution- Coal, Iron, Cotton/Wool
3.) We also discussed the Mercantilism Theory and how it was realated to Colonalism + Raw Materials

On Wednesday we discussed how Great Britain was the first to attempt the Agricultural Revolution. Some of the topics discussed were:
1.) Enclosure
2.) Farming for a profit
3.) New breeding methods
4.) New farming methods
5.) New technologies invented to improve production/labour

Overall we had a great week of learning. It is important that students are starting to prepare for their unit test which will take place on Wednesday March 28. Students should work through their review sheet, look over their work booklets and read over their textbook.

Semester 2

Hello parents and grade 9 students. Welcome to a new semester! I look forward to working with all of you and I would like to wish you a great start to all your new classes.

Just a reminder that we have made a change in our course for the new semester. Instead of having English one day and Socials the following we have decided to try something new and focus on 3 week units. Social Studies (The French Revolution Chapter 3) will be the focus for the next few weeks.

In class today we discussed the following:
1.) What started/fueled the French Revolution?
2.) Who were the Estates General?
3.) What was the Great Fear?

Please keep up to date on your booklets and bring your textbook to every class.

Poetry Day 1

Hello parents and students. In Humanities today we started our poetry unit. The students will be analyzing a variety of poems and picking them apart to develop a depper understanding for poetry.

Today we did the following:
1.) Reviewed the different parts of poetry- Rhythm, Melody, Imagery, Form
2.) We focused on Rhythm
3.) Made our own colour poem

Homework- Please read up on the Bourgeoise and Louis the 14th (The Sun King) in chapter 3 of your Social Studies text book for tomorrow's class

French Revolution

In Humanities 9 yesterday we finished up our Mid Summer Nights Dream video production. We will be watching the video on Friday!

In class today we started to look at the French Revolution Chapter 3 in the textbook. Over the next few weeks we will be learning about the French Revolution and we will be starting a poetry unit.

Today we will finish our storyboarding in preperation for filming on Monday.
